Story:
The Garden City Trojans football team had not given up a touchdown all season and while the Carey Seahawks wanted to be the team to score six points against GC, what Carey wanted even more, was a victory. It was the Nassau Conference ll semi final game at Hofstra University on Friday afternoon November 13th and it pitted the No. 1 Trojans against the No. 4 Seahawks. Late in the first quarter, with Carey in the red zone with a 4th and inches, GC's Chris Stapleford caused a fumble that was recovered on the two yard line by teammate Brian Fischer. On the next play, Fischer zigged and zagged 97 yards to the endzone completing the longest rushing touchdown in Garden City history.Topher DiBona's extra point was good and GC took a 7-0 lead. The Trojans went up 13-0 on a Stephen Jahelka four yard run. Carey's Greg D'Arienzo caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Zahradka in the closing seconds of the first half, and with a missed extra point, the Seahawks went into the half trailing 13-6. The Seahawks began the second half with some renewed energy and tied the score on a four yard run by D'Arienzo. The Trojans answered back as QB Matt Montgomery connected with Kevin Dachille on a 20-yard pass. As the Trojans were preparing for the extra point attempt, a penalty on Carey put the ball in a better position for the Trojans to attempt the two point conversion. Steve Jahelka ran it in to give Garden City a 21-13 lead in the fourth quarter. Although D'Arienzo scored again for the Seahawks, the two point conversion failed, giving GC a 21-19 lead with three minutes left. GC ran out the final minutes of the game, finally ending when Montgomery picked up the first down at the 1-yard line by an inch.
