Garden City Trojans Defeat North Babylon Bulldogs 9-6 to Win the Long Island Conference II Football Championship

Hempstead, New York - November 27, 2009 - In a matchup of two undefeated teams, the Garden City Trojans of Nassau County met the North Babylon Bulldogs of Suffolk County for the Conference II Long Island football championship at Hofstra University's Shuart Stadium. The Bulldogs are known for their "Ground and Pound" style of play. The Trojans' tough defense only allowed three points during the regular season, and three touchdowns in the playoffs. North Babylon received the opening kickoff but a later fumble that was recovered by GC's Connor Horl gave the Trojans possession. Runs by Stephen Jahelka and Brian Fischer, along with a Matt Montgomery completion to Joe Tursi brought the Trojans into NB territory where Montgomery connected on a pass to Kevin Dachille to put the Trojans up 6-0. With the Trojans deep in Bulldogs territory, NB's Preshod McCoy picked off a pass to give the Bulldogs the ball at their own 2 yard line. With NB moving the ball on runs by Ryan Crawley and Adam Amin, a penalty on GC put the Bulldogs near midfield but as GC's Mike Giannone put pressure on NB QB Brian Kennedy who was looking to pass, Stephen Jahelka makes the interception for the Trojans. Ian Perez intecepts a Montgomery pass as time runs out to end the first half with the Trojans up 6-0. The Bulldogs kickoff to begin the second half and GC's Matt Confort returns the ball near to the 40 yd line. GC can't get anything out of the series and gives the ball up after going for it on 4th down. NB's McCoy takes it to the outside and ties the game up at 6-6. NB had a chance and got deep into GC territory but a fumble on a 4th down try gives GC the ball back. The game got exciting in the fourth quarter beginning with Brian Fischer's quick kick for GC. Fischer was deep in his own territory, and the ball traveled 68 yards. It seemed to catch the Bulldogs off guard as NB player inadvertently touched the ball. GC's Billy Allen landed on it, giving GC possession and in scoring range.
