Garden City girls lacrosse wins Long Island Class B Championship with 17-7 win over Rocky Point

The Long Island Class B girls lacrosse championship game matched the defending state champion Garden City Trojans against Suffolk County's Rocky Point Eagles at Dowling College on Sunday afternoon June 6th. The Eagles came into the game ranked in the top 20 nationally and ranked second in Class B in New York state but they were going up against a team they had never beaten before. The Trojans came into the game riding a Long Island-best 24-game winning streak after having defeated Wantagh, for their sixth straight Nassau Class B titles. They've won four straight state titles with an average margin of victory this season at more than nine goals. After taking an 11-2 halftime lead it looked like the Trojans were closing in on their fifth consecutive LI title. GC's Mikaela Rix was on fire scoring six goals in the game. Combine Rix's six goals with strong play from others on offense, including Shannon Mangini's four goals, and the solid play by the defense, including seven saves by Kelly Weis and the Trojans came away with a 17-7 victory. GC will resume its quest for a fifth straight state title Friday at noon against upstate Canandaigua (19-1) at SUNY Cortland.
