In the first game of the season, the Garden City Trojans varsity football team played host to the Mepham Pirates on Tuesday afternoon, September 7th. GC, the defending Class II LI champions, who compiled nine shutouts in a 12-0 season in 2009, posted another one in its 2010 opener, defeating Mepham, 28-0. After Brian Fischer intercepted Mepham's Nick White and returned the ball to the one yard line, Stephen Jahelka scored the first touchdown of the season on a 1 yard run with 2:35 left in the 1st quarter. QB Tom Gordon rushed for a second quarter TD to give the Trojans a 14-0 lead at the half. Another Jahelka TD, combined with Ryan Norton's extra point, in the 3rd quarter made it 21-0. In the closing minutes of the game, defensive tackle Scott Mongiardo hit White and jarred the ball loose at the Mepham 18. Anton Dobrolezhin recovered the fumble at the 10 and raced in for the final touchdown of the game.
