Garden City Trojans defeat Manhasset 10-6 to win Woodstick Lacrosse Classic

Meeting for the 120th time since 1935 the boys lacrosse teams of Garden City and Manhasset met on Manhasset's Ed Walsh Field for the annual Wood Stick Classic on Saturday night April 30th. This historic lacrosse rivalry began on Long Island in 1935 and has now become the nation's longest uninterrupted high school sports rivalry. Between them they have over 1800 victories and a list of county, Long Island and state championships. Garden City had won 11 of its last 14 meetings with the Indians but the trophy has belonged to Manhasset for the last two years. The Indians came out strong on Saturday night and scored on its first possession but the Trojans did not back down. GC used a balanced attack, featuring nine assists, and scored six straight second-half goals to go on to beat Manhasset, 10-6. Garden City Junior Devin Dwyer led all scoring with three goals and an assist. Liam Kennedy had two goals and three assists, Patric Berkery, 2 goals/1 assist; Tom Gordon, 1 goal; Brian Coleman, 1 goal; Rob Savage , 1 assist; Justin Gutterding, 3 assist. In goal for the Trojans was Dan Marino who made nine saves. Scoring for Manhasset: Ryan Matthews, 2 goals; Joe Mancini, 1 goal; Harry Kucharczyk, 1 goal. Frank Morelli made seven saves in goal for the Indians.
