| The Woodstick Classic - Boys Varsity Lacrosse - Garden City vs Manhasset

Story:
In 1935 the high school lacrosse teams at Garden City and Manhasset
started a tradition that is still alive and well today. Back then,
they played each other in a game that the Manhasset Indians won by a
score of 9-0. It was the first time that these two teams met in what
has become the longest and oldest continuous scholastic lacrosse
rivalry in the nation and what is now known as the Woodstick Classic.
Fast forward to 7pm on Saturday, March 31st, 2007, at Manhasset HS
where the two teams met for the 116th playing of the Woodstick.
Manhasset
leads the series 64-51, but Garden City has won 11 out of the last 13 games.
As the temperatures dropped, the stands filled with fans from both
teams who have come to expect excitement at every level. Last year's game
was no exception as Garden City won in sudden death overtime on a Robert
Engelke goal 1:26 into overtime.
The Trojans opened the scoring early on Saturday night and although
the Indians kept it close, Garden City ultimately won the game by a
score of 11-8. Dean Gibbons had four goals and an assist for GC while
Dan Savage had three goals. Rounding out Garden City's scoring,
Francis McDonough and Tim Holman each scored twice. Goalkeeper Brian
McCullough made 12 saves.
Manhasset's scoring included two goals each by Ryan Young and Tristan Miller while Kevin Heenan, Scott Herdemian, Pat English and Jimmy Wenk scored one a piece. Goalie James Petracca made 11 saves......
