It was a fast paced, edge of your seat, nail biting, double over time game between the Garden City Trojans and the Comsewogue Warriors with the winner coming away with a Class B Long Island Championship boys lacrosse title. If you missed it, you missed a classic that included four lead changes, hard hits, and a winning goal that came 52 seconds into the second overtime period. Comsewogue jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but goals by GC's Tom Gordon and Liam Kennedy evened it up early in the second quarter. The Trojans took a two goal lead after Kennedy and Matt Montgomery each scored within 28 seconds. With time about to expire in the half, the Warriors Doug Foley took to the air and scored but not before silencing the crowd as he took an inadvertent hit to the head and laid motionless after hitting the ground. He got up and walked off the field to the applause from both sides of the stadium. After play resumed for the second half, Tom Gordon scored on a pass from Devin Dwyer and put the Trojans back up by two but a goal by Comsewogue's Ryan Brunet made it 5-4. Patric Berkery scored to give the Trojans another two goal lead but a penalty gave Comsewogue a man up opportunity and the Warriors cashed in not once, but twice and tied the game up at 6-6 on two quick goals by Tom Cleary. With momentum seeming to be on the Warriors side, Brunet and teammate Alex Zomerfeld each scored for an 8-6 lead in the 4th quarter. The GC offense ramped things up and took multiple shots on goalie Patrick Bonacum but after numerous saves, he let a shot by Tom Gordon get by with close to two minutes left in the game. With the Trojans trailing by one and time winding down to just 10 seconds left in regulation Liam Kennedy took a feed from Devin Dwyer and scored his third goal to tie the game. GC fans went wild as the Comsewogue fans appeared a bit stunned as their team seemed to have the game wrapped up only to be facing overtime. The first OT period saw terrific saves by both goalkeepers forcing a second OT. GC Goalie Alex Castronovo made a great save on a shot by Tom Hughes just seconds into the period. Matt Confort got the ball for GC and passed to Brian Fischer who, on a fastbreak passed the ball to a waiting Devin Dwyer. The play worked like clockwork as Dwyer passed to Gordon who scored the game winner and gave the Trojans the 9-8 victory and the Long Island Championship title.
