Tim Goettelmann, Lacrosse Magazine's 2010 Person of the Year, put together the first Woodstick Classic Alumni Game held April 30 in Manhasset, N.Y., as part of an all-day event to benefit his charity, Monster's Kids. Goettelmann, who became Major League Lacrosse's all-time leading scorer last summer in his 10th season with the Long Island Lizards and whose charitable work led to his nomination for LM's Person of the Year honors has worked tirelessly to put this all-day affair together. It is intended to raise money needed to renovate a playroom at Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York. The day began with a Lizards training camp session and ended about 12 hours later with the 120th meeting between the Manhasset and Garden City boys' teams, the longest uninterrupted public school lacrosse rivalry in the United States. After an honorary faceoff between Steve Finnell and Bill Cherry (the current coaches of the Garden City and Manhasset HS teams) the alumni game began. Manhasset jumped out to a fast lead but Garden City caught up, making for an exciting end to the game, with Manhasset winning the alumni game by a score of 12-11. Goettelmann hopes that this game will become as much of a tradition as the HS Wood Stick Classic. To donate to Monster's Kids, visit https://support.northshorelij.com/monsterskids.
